An alternative iOS app store to be launched by Setapp in Europe next year

Setapp looks to profit on law changes in EU!

Setapp, an app subscription service has announced that it is planning to launch an alternative app store for iOS and iPadOS in 2024 in Europe. This comes after the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) which requires ‘gatekeeper‘ companies such as Apple to open their services to others and enable alternative App Stores to feature on their platform.

The Setapp app store will let users access universal Setapp apps on other devices

Setapp is an app subscription service that lets users access more than 200 Mac apps and these apps offered by the service save users time and effort and range from photo editors to online checkouts.

The Setapp store will be available only in the European Union and will offer apps from more than 30 current developers from its Mac-based subscription service. The new app store will also make sure that iOS users can also discover and download various apps on their iPhones and iPads.

European Union passed the DMA law back in November 2022 and with it, Apple needs to allow side-loading and alternative app stores on its platforms. The users will be able to download apps from outside its official ‌Apple App Store‌ and developers will also need not pay any fees to Apple.

Apple is currently working to implement sideloading support with its upcoming iOS 17 to comply with the new EU regulations which is expected to release in September 2023. As Apple moves to comply with the DMA or it risks fines of 20% of its global revenue, Setapp looks to launch its alternative app store by next year when the EU regulations come into effect.
